Don’t let the name fool you! Heavy Metal 101 offers an insightful and thorough look into the evolution of heavy metal music. Definitely worth downloading and listening! 5 stars!
Heavy Metal 101 is rich on history, full of great anecdotes and stories, technique, and offers a listening experience to tie it all together. Love that the hosts backgrounds are in classical and modern composition - a fun surprise. Eric teaches and John learns alongside the listeners. So glad this podcast exists!
If you are a metal fan or just interested are learning about listen to this show. The proper respect being given to King Diamond shows the reliability of this show as an educational source.
If you want to hear some deep cuts from old albums, some comparisons to classical composers from PhDs and if you like the dynamic where someone is roasting a newbie this show is for you. However, I started this hoping it would be 80% academic history of Heavy Metal and 20% opinion. While it started that way, the dynamic between the co-host would eventually became a chore to listen to and because the co-host wouldn’t open their mind. The final straw to stop was when the co-host said “Crazy Train” had a great intro and then mediocre remainder of the song and lead host said it wasn’t their favorite either.
