This has been my favorite podcast and must listen for many years now. Max as host is hilarious and knows how to bring the right crew together. Love Barry, Barney, Johnathan, Nicky, Jordan and the rest of the crew. Great updates and analysis and even better banter!

I’ve listened to the Guardian’s Football Weekly for over a decade now. It’s always a pleasant listen — Max Rushden is a knowledgeable host who keeps things light and the panelists each bring a journalist’s expertise to the conversation. The pod is, thankfully, free of hot take merchants who try to engender listener engagement through provocation. The focus is primarily on the Premier League and UEFA competitions but there’s a bit on Scotland’s top tier and England’s lower leagues, too, as well as occasional updates on Spain and Italy. If you’re looking for an intelligent review of the above conducted with a fair amount of humor, this podcast is for you.

Fellow Americans, did you enjoy the World Cup and want to learn more about the English Premier League? Then this is the podcast for you. Max is a great host, Barry has a great sense of humor. The rotating guests are excellent. Show is very informative. You’ll be saying pitch, kit, boot and table before you know it.

Faithful listener first. Annoyed listener most of the time. Extremely white Euro-centric perspectives here that the host and guests (except for a few) have no idea how overwhelming it is for people of color to listen to the same exceptionalism narratives applied to football but particularly English then European football. Like so many Western Europeans they think theirs is the only way. South American football is physically demanding but that does not make them savages. Plus completely blind to their own nation’s doing the same thing when they encounter a proper player like Messi or Yamal who get kicked all over the pitch but somehow that is never noticed. Most fans want geopolitics left out of their sports but you cannot ignore the colonialist tropes when you hear them. Still good for a laugh and thank goodness for Barry’s presence to occasionally keep the British Empire in touch with reality. Supporter the way so I put my money where my mouth is. Get more people of color or at least white folk who are not English/European. FIFA scandal update: turns out the democracy and human rights crowd on this show don’t believe in one nation one vote for FIFA. They would be just fine if the Europeans ran everything and the little people are told to sit down shut up and be grateful for whatever we decide to give you.

But over the course of time, I found myself listening to them less and less. And the times I did listen, I found it becoming a chore to get through an episode. It not being a “fun” or “banter” podcast is fine, but it doesn’t make up for that aspect with high level football analysis. It’s either very on the surface, match highlight reels levels of insight, or reactive punditry to football-narrative drivel from other outlets, such as Sky Sports, and their punditry. Neither of which provides any interesting or insightful view point from the sport they cover. Barring an appearance from the likes of say, Nicky Bandini, most of these guests and hosts have either smug, stale, or uninteresting contributions, filled with lazy narratives and cliches. As a result, the podcast has really gone downhill over the years.
