Dialed In - Some Obsession Required

Uncle Matty can come across a tad gruff and unpolished, but if you know his background, like the fact that he was very successful in the financial world, got fired and forced out of his own firm, has debilitating anxiety about driving his own amazing car collection, etc. and still manages to build this amazing business and community from the ground up …it’s an amazing listen.

Great podcast, very engaging, and it brings Matt’s whole spectrum full circle. Listening to it has made me laugh and bring a tear to my eye. I’m glad there’s other people out there that think the same way I do. There’s a lot of inspiration in here if you listen for it!

I listen to lots of podcasts. This one is outstanding. I started watching Obsessed Garage (OG) on YouTube a few months ago and caught the detailing bug. I thought I had been cleaning my car the “correct way” for years but wasn’t; I was destroying my clear coat. Like most things, the more you learn about it, the more you realize either laziness, ego, confirmation bias, or accepting mediocrity stands in the way of developing skill or mastery in a field. Thankfully, this show goes beyond OG’s consistent brand of oddly enjoyable longform technical diatribes and the methodical application of Matt Moreman’s research in the automotive field. Depending on who you are, for better or worse this podcast isn’t really about detailing or cars. It’s a left brain and a right brain having a conversation. I often think of Bryan as captaining the right- the thoughtful, emotional, and creative beating heart, leaving Matt as the clinical, cold, calculating left. Sometimes they switch sides. These two are giving eachother PhD-level therapy sessions without the onerous guilt of paying for it or slogging it out with academic quackery. There’s a vulnerability on display that’s rather bold and unique for the medium. It’s reflected in honest discussions of family, career and the life lived in between. Bryan is typically first to drive at a deeper psychological reason for why Matt is the way he is, and Matt will parry and respond with his own psychoanalysis of Bryan. There’s moments of clarity in here that are seemingly magical for either them or the listener, much owed to the humility and willingness to experience the collapse and exposure of one’s ego in a public format. Bryan’s production is top notch. It’s one of the more addicting shows on my roster.

Matt knows detailing and has brought together a nice range of products, but I advise caution as he can be inclined to rant about COVID, politics or anything he considers stupid. It can be a tough listen when that happens because then he’s mostly just frustrated. Maybe there is a better way to filter the troll questions?
