I’ve recently stumbled upon this podcast and have been binge-listening to all the episodes. As I’m going through my own complex therapy journey, it’s really helped supplement my sessions with the concepts and language used in the episodes. Some of the negative reviews mention not liking their voice or style, but I honestly love both! It’s like listening to very knowledgeable and professional clinicians who are also down-to-earth, approachable and a bit sassy. Keep it coming!

I like the concept of the podcast and I will keep listening, but sometimes it seems like the hosts don’t prep their guests. Moreover the hosts already have scripted ideas of how they would respond to their own questions. So when a guest responds to their question, they can come back and give an even more refined response to their own question that tops the guest. Why have someone on if you’re not going to give them the lead in sharing ideas? Try to have an actual conversation.I suggest giving guests the questions beforehand so they aren’t sounding so blindsided.

I liked the podcast but find it interesting how being ageist is an accepted ‘ism’—especially by therapists. The boomer comments and older people references garnered groans and giggles which I personally find offensive. You would be the first to be sensitive to other attitudes related to race, gender or identity, but seem to have no issue with age.

*What Your Therapist Thinks* is comforting if your experience fits the hosts’ frame. But if your suffering is tied to systems of power, racism, displacement, or generational poverty, it cannot reach you. Therapy without cultural literacy becomes another form of erasure dressed up as self-care.
The podcast wants to make therapy more human, yet forgets that humanity is plural. Cultural competence is not optional; it is the baseline for ethical healing. Without it, this is compassion that cannot see who is missing from the room.
