I am so enjoying this podcast! I have only listened to one so far but definitely plan to continue. I would hope that everyone listens to the Vanessa Van Edwards one. Her information was so helpful. I am excited to share it with my health coaching clients. Thanks Dan for sharing these with all of us!!

I just finished listening to the interview you had with Dr. Daniel Amen. His mission of improving brain health is commendable. However, when was discussing your SPECT scan and all the information he could glean from it I was flabbergasted.
As a neuroradiologist the idea of seeing all the abnormalities using nothing but a SPECT scans everyday sounds ludicrous. He must be using some “new” or special technology I’ve never heard of. In daily practice SPECT scans predominantly evaluate for Parkinson’s. Different nuclear medicine scans evaluate for Alzheimer’s.
Also he mentioned that he can see “healing” of the brain on scans. What does that mean? In general after the brain injured, if visible on a scan there can be an area of encephalomalacia seen. Encephalomalacia is like a brain scar and does not “heal”. Dr. Amen must be talking about something else I suppose.
Many brain injuries such as concussion are invisible on standard brain imaging and although it is possible Amen is using some specialized technology, I fear he’s interpreting scan from a biased standpoint after he gathers all the info from a patient, which he subsequently reportedly can visualize on these incredible scans.
It is interesting that he mentioned in the end that he had to stand at the medical board where another physician told him he’s a fraud.
Even though Dr. Amen’s message is commendable it sounds like he’s using questionable methods and I suspect there’s snake oil salesmanship going on. After Amen is making tons of money.
