This podcast is a gift to educators — and in fact anyone who engages with young people regularly, including parents. In each rich, well-produced episode, Betsy shares highly relatable stories of teacher struggle, looking at moments of emotional response to student challenges with deep compassion as well as psychotherapeutic rigor.
Because the educator challenges in the stories are so universal, listening feels like having your own one-on-one coaching session with Betsy. When I first found the podcast, my husband (also an educator) and I binged the show on a long car ride, finding ourselves mesmerized by Betsy’s sparkling clear insights, taking them with us and thinking about our own work. In one episode, Betsy talks about the need for educators to address students’ developmental needs with attunement and treat them the way they deserve to be treated — which is something that Betsy offers so deftly to teachers in her show. This is a must listen for educators that will leave you feeling validated, buoyed, and challenged to keep moving forward with renewed understanding of the role that emotions play in our work.

Listening to the Teaching through Emotions podcast is like savoring that first cup of coffee in the morning. It wakes you up to your working environment and to the group dynamics of the people with whom you work. It tunes you in, so that you're focused on how you contribute to that environment and those relationships. It gives you the energy and tools you need to meet those dynamics head-on, in a productive way. And lastly, it warms your soul, in that Betsy's approach is witty, direct, and no-nonsense, yet also supportive-- she acknowledges that we all have human foibles and aren't perfect. The listener feels seen and valued as a person and as an educator, as someone doing important work. I recommend it to anyone who wants some fuel to improve their practice!

This podcast is an incredible help to teachers and addresses topics that are typically not part of conversations about pedagogy or educational development: the emotions and relationships that teachers experience in the classroom. I have benefitted from Betsy Burris’ thoughtful advice for years and am so thrilled she is sharing ideas and insights as a regular podcast. I am a huge fan and would recommend this podcast to teachers at all levels. A very unique and helpful voice!

I listened to the May 1 episode because my friend was on it! What an enjoyable podcast to listen to and learn from! There were things I learned that would help me in my everyday life, but would have certainly helped if I was still teaching. Betsy and her guest have a great conversation about my friend’s teaching and wellness journey. They also discussed self-care, but more importantly, about being cared for, not only in one’s personal life, but in one’s professional life. Definitely worth listening to!
