Once Upon A Crescent: Muslim Kids Podcast

by Mrs. Hashimi

Once Upon a Crescent is a collection of Islamic bedtime stories for children. Written and produced by a Muslim elementary school teacher, these stories aim to impart Islamic morals to kids through light-hearted storytelling. Not only are stories a great way to settle into a bedtime routine, but they also provide rich opportunities for meaningful dialogue between parent and child. Snuggle up with your little one and feel free to use this podcast as a starting point to talk about Islamic values. My goal is to facilitate some important moral conversations by introducing Islamic values with storytelling. For more information go to MrsHashimi.com

My young children and I adore this podcast. Every time we get in the car my kids request as many episodes as we can fit of just this one podcast nothing else will do. I love it! Although we are not Muslim, there are so many universal truths and kindness taught in each episode that can be applied to everyone everywhere and we have started praying at other times of our day thanks to the Muslim teachings. I would like to become a subscriber, but I cannot get the website to load or find information elsewhere. Thank you 😊😊😊

We discovered Mrs Hashmi when we received a personalized Eid story by Mrs Hashmi as a gift from a friend. Since then we’ve become hooked…we’ve become a Once Upon a Crescent family and have listened to all the episodes multiple times on our car rides to school. May Allah SWT bless Mrs Hashmi and her family many times over for making our car rides so enjoyable and full of amazing reflection…to the point where my kids (one of whom despises going out) are happier to go out for an errand if I’ll play Mrs Hashmi. But this hasn’t only been beneficial for the kids, I’ve learned so much as a parent. So much so, that when I speak gently now, my kids point out that I’m copying Mrs Hashmi. And also if I’m raising my voice I’ve been reminded of the episode where the mother doesn’t yell when the sugar jar breaks 😀. I’ve also used it to resolve conflicts between my kids. Now when we’re in a conflict situation at home where mean words are involved …I often say remember the Mrs Hashmi episode…speak good or stay silent! (If I had said that on its own it probably wouldn’t have the same impact - but now because it’s linked to a story the message becomes so much more powerful). The parents in all the episodes are the kind of parents we would all aspire to be…I also love the hadith selections…they stay in your mind long after the story, and are stated in such a beautiful integrated way without being preachy. We love the variance in names, characters (both animal and human!), settings, and sound effects too. My favorite episodes are The Gentle Giraffes (because I need to hear that message for myself), and the one about the Honest Date Seller. This podcast is honestly one of the best parts of my children’s childhood. There is so much goodness in it. From great life/moral lessons for everyone (despite their faith) to developing a strong sense of Muslim identity to just having fun listening to a great story…it’s fantastic and such a gift to the Ummah. May Allah SWT bless all those involved infinitely.
