Newbie Star Trek - Podcast Rankings and reviews

As much as I enjoy podcasts with friends who have good chemistry, this podcast has way too much preamble most weeks. It sometimes will go 20+ minutes before really starting to talk about the episode in the title. If the lead-up was especially funny or insightful that would be one thing, but it’s frequently in need of a huge edit.

It is enjoyable to hear new perspectives on these episodes and I sometimes come away from a story I’ve known for decades with a brand new insight. I do think some jokes fall very flat and there are times they all take a little too much glee in putting the show down, but as someone once said (slightly in jest), “Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant!”

This would be a 5 star podcast if they had some focus or an editor. Almost every podcast has 25 minutes of chatter at the start, usually at least 5 minutes about a VPN, before the podcast starts. Listened to one from October in 2024 where they didn’t start talking about the episode until 40 minutes in.

When they finally get to the episode it’s hilarious content. The age of the episodes and Star Trek “weirdness” that most fans just accept gets a priceless roasting.

Genuinely a great podcast that does something unique in the sci fi space, as long as you’re okay skipping a lot of stuff.

my new favorite tng podcast lol keeps me giggling as i remember the episodes (most i’ve seen many times) from a fresh perspective. you can tell the hosts are really friends and they all have great chemistry and it’s just generally a lot of fun.

Just wanted to say I liked the show and love the time you all chat before you jump into the episode.

You can tell you are friends and when I listen I feel like I’m hanging out with you all and that authenticity is what I’m looking for. You got a fan for as long as you continue with this show thank you...

The idea of seeing the show through someone’s eyes for the first time is a good one and interesting points are brought up in each episode. The thing that is most off putting to me, however, is the frequency of swearing. I don’t mind swearing every now and then to add emphasis or make a joke, but when it is every other sentence it comes off as lazy and tiresome.

If you’re a recovering addict, you will probably not be entertained by the inordinate amount of time these boys spend talking about various weed strains. If they could stay on topic, it would be an entertaining show though.
