Angie Dee is my intellectual soul mate on the topic of education. We are in total agreement on every one of your topics. As an adult educator there is tremendous application of your approach with adults. I especially like your comment that learning is doing. Absolutely! Learning is a verb. My first career is nursing. The 2nd week of the program we were in the hospital to begin learning to be a nurse. Through out the program the focus was on applying what we learned to the clinical setting. Needless to say I was perplexed when I attended a MBA program. Yes, we did the usual case studies, projects, and class discussions. Yet we always stayed in the classroom. The application level of Bloom’s taxonomy was analyzing case studies. Yikes! Where was the hands-on portion? The only one I had was when I visited a shop that did CAD-CAM for men’s suits. My business plan required manufacturing, which I knew nothing about. Similar to your guest on Ep. 7, this type of learning sinks into our brains deeper that merely reading about something in a book. I remember vividly experiential learning sessions. Truly, there’s no better way to learn than doing.
During a Nutrition class I was facilitating the question was raised about affordability of a family of four on the program. The challenge was thrown down to the students. We established a weekly $ amount a family on public aid receives for food. Teams were formed. We visited the nearby Super Target to determine if good nutrition was possible with welfare funding for food. The task was that each team prepare a food plan for 2 adults and 2 children for a week meeting nutrition needs. The teams scattered and treated a food plan, placing the food items in their cart. We agree to meet at the Cafe so each team could present their findings. It was nothing short of amazing! Each team demonstrated that despite popular belief, attaining good nutrition on a limited budget was possible provided you had the proper guidelines. Five or so years later I encounter several students from that class. They recalled with great clarity and enthusiasm how that learning episode made a remarkable impression on them. When they grocery shop they keep the guidelines of good nutrition in mind, still today. Who knows how long the learning will remain imprinted, yet it works!

I eagerly await future episodes depicting your revolutionary take on education. You get it!
