Despite Mr. Kirby confusing a Curtis Mayfield sample with a Willie Hutch sample in the last episode, this is still the best music podcast I’ve ever heard. They have an endlessly deep well of knowledge of the American recording industry and just Global music culture in general and have such a refreshing reverence for the important players and producers who often barely even approached the limelight. Local record impresarios, barroom crooners and all manner of charismatic weirdos are respected alongside the greats, in a way that never feels colonial or condescending. They never brag about having discovered some unknown outsider artist or obscure label, but often have some genuine connection through friends of family to people who made incredible pop music in the 60’s-80’s and never thought they’d hear about it again. Conversely, their excitement about modern music sets them WAY apart from the pervasive Old-Head-ism that pervades the world of private press reissues and eclectic but hyper curated DJ-ing. These guys are the real deal and if you can wait for months between episodes, you will be as richly rewarded as I have been. Love these fools, hope they keep ‘em coming.

You might think you know something about music but this pod will send you into another dimension. Half the stuff they play isn’t even on discogs, the other half is hiding in plain sight in the dollar bins of the world, all of it is amazing. Fellas if you’re reading this, please never stop making episodes for your small but fiercely loyal army!

Hey guys loved the most recent episode as I had been going down an AMG rabbit hole recently and you came along with mucho knowledge to drop. One interesting thing, as soon as you started playing “Naked” by Tyrone Harris it sounded so familiar - the most recent and best thing I found on AMG was a version of the same song by Eddie “Big Black Funky Slave” Simpson! And it’s not a new vocal over the same track but a completely different recording, using actual strings instead of synth, etc. I might actually prefer the lo-fi accompaniment on the Harris version, but I’d say the Simpson vocal is superior, certainly more soulful and less crooner.
