I didn’t find REK until later in his career (2009), but since then he’s been the cornerstone of the music I listen to. One of the best parts of finding REK was it led to more and more great artists. I realized that Americana music was now my life’s soundtrack. Now, with the podcast, he’s opened the door to even more music and artists, and expands the knowledge/understanding of what Americana music is, the relationship between the artists and their fans, and the commitment of the artists to their music. I’ve only been listening to this genre for a few years and there are many artist that fall into it, quite a few I don’t know about. This podcast not only introduces you to some of those artist it also gives you insight into some of there influences. And Robert is a great host who all the guest seem to respect for not only because of his music but also because he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

If you’ve seen Robert Earl Keen love you know how personable he is when engaging the audience between songs. He is a born interviewer and appears to love the work.
And to Answer the question of the day, Americana in one word is a mutt. Picture a crossroads bar in rural Northern Mississippi. Customers come east from Texas wanting Tejano music or Oklahoma Red Dirt, south from Memphis with the Blues, west from Alabama wanting Hank, Sr., and north from New Orleans wanting Zydeco and Dixieland. The house band really just wants to rock Robert Johnson, but they blend in a little of everything to keep the beer bottles away from the chicken wire. That to me is Americana.
