566: Brian Chesky | Lessons Airbnb Learned to Survive the Pandemic

Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky joins us to discuss what the company learned while surviving the trials of the pandemic and what's in store for the future.

  • Great episode and great to hear Brian talk about the way he solves problems in cities, it's easy to only listen to the complaints by cities but they also seem todo a lot of good

  • 44:00 - 56:00 the lessons and principles from dealing with the crisis are great. “In a crisis a bad business fails. A good business survives. A great business is defined”. Very anti-fragile mindset @Nicolas @David

Thanks @Sam, I like his comment about some key behaviors in a crisis: be decisive, use principles to guide decisions, over-communicate, and stay optimistic and even-keeled (psychology is important!).

  • 1:20:00 - “guests calling because they’re paralysed - turns out eaten a tray of brownies”. Totally had that when I ran an Airbnb. I was woken by a guest at 3am who said his friend was dying. Dude couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move. Turns out he was just pulling the biggest whitey I’ve ever seen and was fine

I can't imagine what is like to run an Airbnb in Amsterdam, the horror stories from friends who lived in the center made me cringe

Also Brian's take on living nomadic is very interesting, properly not something he had in mind when he started Airbnb but it seems they also have had a lot of luck with the housing market and the pandemic seems to create a paradigm shift

  • @Jordan-Harbinger Thanks so much for this episode, it's so refreshing to hear actual stories about successful founders that had to struggle and fight for every step by being creative and thinking outside the (cereal) box

Yea I do love the creativity! Apparently that’s what got them into YC because they concluded they would get themselves out of their problems even though they weren’t sure about the business 🔥
