“The Disturbing Truth” is one of those unexpected gifts in life that cause you to be torn between shouting to everyone because it is so amazing … or holding it close as your own secret because you don’t want to risk anyone hearing it who might not appreciate how unique and powerful each episode and MrBlack is.

It does not matter if you’ve heard the story of the crime told 100 times 100 different ways. You will ALWAYS learn more from MrBlack. The research is extensive, accurate (from all I’ve seen) and unbelievably woven together with details that keeps you wanting to drive longer, stand in line to keep waiting, or prolong any activity just so you can hear how it ends. I love anything in life that slows me down and lets me enjoy the moment I am in. This show does that for me.

Although the facts and stories are exquisitely written and presented- the moon, sun , stars, planets and ENTIRE GALAXY of this podcast is the narrator who has a stunning natural and instinctual talent that no one compares to.
I rarely leave reviews and certainly never rave such as this, but I want to be one of the first to publicly say , mark my words: this narrator is not staying on just YouTube or podcasts. (Not meaning to minimize these massive accomplishments). I’m simply stating that I hope his dreams are big because they are right there within his grasp. I see major awards and more success right around the corner.
Knowing how to weave the details, time each word, sentence and episode to know the appropriate length these should be is an actual skill that most underestimate. Knowing when something calls for sensitivity and when things need to be lightened up is another skill SO MANY others miss. Additionally, there is a raw and sincere sensitivity shown to the victims and their families that many others won’t do or gloss over as if talking about the weather. He wants to educate in a way that doesn’t exploit; which often can be hard given the subject matter.

MrBlack’s natural born smooth and masculine voice is so soothing (even when discussing serial killers lol). Truly I understand opinions may vary regarding preference with narrators and content. However the abundance of talent from the narrator combined with the unique writing makes this a podcast no true crime fan should ever miss.

Well written and researched. I like the narrator’s voice. The stories are great because I haven’t heard many of them before.

Some episodes are excellent some are hyperbolic. Always worth a listen because it is unique and host has a storytelling style that is compelling and personal. He does not joke or giggle or stray from gory details. His disgust for these predators is fine by me.
Richard Huckle episode is absolutely great. Just listen! It’s the gold standard.

I liked hearing about cases I haven’t seen elsewhere but the host continuously refers to the perpetrators as monsters who deserve to be caged like animals. In some cases this includes mentally ill perpetrators, or even includes people involved who are only alleged to have done someone wrong. The dehumanizing of the perpetrators feels gross to me. There is no excusing their actions but calling them monsters and saying they are evil is an easy way to say “they aren’t like me”. The people who commit these crimes don’t see others as people. If we do the same to them, are we really so different?

Many of these episodes are the host reading the Wikipedia entry verbatim. No real research was done. (You could literally follow along with the Wikipedia entry in the Toolbox Killers episode).

There are better true crime podcasts out there that do the research and are much, much more than someone reading a Wikipedia entry to you. But if you just want a basic overview, then this is for you.
