What listeners say

A curated, balanced selection of Apple Podcasts reviews.

This rating is for Terry. The reality is that Fresh Air is what is because of Terry Gross. Her energy and warmth establishes comfort in her interviewees, but she doesn’t shy away from asking questions and follow ups that draw out interesting and complex answers you don’t hear in interviews with the same people. This talent distinguishes her from the endless list of other interviewers and competing culture podcasts that simply cannot do what she does. I find myself skipping this podcast more and more when I scroll through an episode and don’t hear her voice. I’m not sure what the future holds, but if you are a new listener and want to hear Fresh Air at top performance, try to find her interviews. It’s challenging because the descriptions don’t say who conducts the interview (frustrating but I get it).

I’ve been a regular listener for many years. Love listening to Terry Gross, Dave Davies and now the very articulate and interesting Tonya Mosley — what a great pick for co-host! However, the interviews are more and more about actors, musicians, directors, comedians and others involved in entertainment culture. We used to get more about politics and hear from others who had experienced or done something unusual or extraordinary. I miss those interviews!

PalssonE · Aug 2024

I’ve been listening to this show since I can remember and have loved Terry’s interviews filled with psychological understanding of her subjects and infused with her unique perspective and personality. Her questions go further and uncover more from her subjects than the standard interview. I know she is wanting to pull back from work and totally understand that but I miss her—badly. While Tonya seems like a lovely person and has the voice to match, but the ability to think of and ask unique questions from a unique perspective is sadly missing. The flavor is missing.

Fresh Air was the first podcast I ever listened & subscribed to. I always looked forward to listening to latest episode during my 90 min daily commute. I learned so much, was introduced to so many interesting people/topics and always felt it was time well spent. Teri Gross is a master storyteller & interviewer. Dave Davies was always delightful to listen to when Teri was vacationing, ill or on another assignment. Not too long ago Teri was away from her interview chair for quite some time tending to a personal matter. Not long after she returned it was announced that Teri would share hosting duties with Tanya Mosley. That’s when the show seemed to have taken on a different identity. There are now a lot more “celebrity” and other “entertainment-focused” interviews. The show has changed a lot and in my opinion not for the best. No offense meant to Tanya Mosley but I don’t find her interviews or the shows she hosts to be of the same quality as when Teri or Dave host. Fresh Air podcasts are an institution but the producers seem to have lost their way lately. Please bring back the old Fresh Air. The new version is not as interesting, stimulating or substantive. I find myself listening very rarely these days and am sad to see the deterioration that’s taken place.

Could you explain why you introduce Hamas’ attack as ‘brutal’ and Israeli retaliation as ‘fierce’? From a numerical perspective 40,000+ deaths, tens of thousands of injuries including the highest rate of child amputees in the world, and over a million households being uprooted seems brutal. Any civilian death is tragic. I don’t understand your framing and would love to understand. Thanks

I always love Terri’s interviews. Really loved the one with Cecily- just a wonderfully open, genuine person. Comedians often just give more of the “show” in interviews- just be funny and irreverent all the time. That’s fine, if that’s what they like or works for them. But, it’s nice to see and hear about their bumps and foibles in a genuine and honest way. I’m an even bigger fan now.
