Brock and Salk

Perfection is impossible to achieve with a radio show, but B and S get darn close so 5 stars is completely warranted. My one nitpick: enough with playing clips of guests singing during segments. It’s bad radio. It makes me cringe and frankly upsets me. It’s not funny, it’s offensive to the ears, and has no value add. Maybe fill it with, idk, anything else. Heck, “Ranked” was even better than that garbage. And I did NOT like Ranked. Uh uh, no sir-ee. So, from now on, reserve Here’s the Thing for dialogue, give away Hawks tix via trivia or spontaneously call up random fans and surprise them with the gift that’ll be the highlight of their month, or anything other than subjecting listeners to such auditory abuse. To complete my compliment sandwich, you guys are the best, the lot of ya. You truly give me something to look forward to every weekday. Fire Dan. Go Hawks.

This 3-star review is the average of 5 separate facets that I have evaluated independently for the benefit of helping you reflect upon the show and what you are choosing to put into the world: 5 stars: Maura. Her production, analysis, and singing talents make her one-of-a-kind and deserving of a raise. 4 stars: The hosts. You take a lot of shots from the text toy but you are far and away the most talented and entertaining sports radio hosts in Seattle, and whatever unincorporated hamlet Brock lives in. 3 stars: The segments need a rethink. Blue 88, ATQJ, Trash Takes, and G are all great. Late Night Mariners Texts, Trivia, and Which is Better are duds. 2 stars: For the love of god, please stop saying “reactionary”. It does not mean what you think it means. The word you want is “reactive”. Brock gets it right in the ad spots. 1 star: The podcast titles have gotten unusable lately after Lyle left. Each title needs to simply list each segment, in order, minus Need To Know (which is a given). Thanks all. Really do love the show!

Let me start by saying that Salk is the perfect host for Seattle Sports. That is, if you like East Coast, faux erudite, nasally, asomewhat whiny affect, and a host that sounds like an 8th grade girl who had her Hello Kitty Purse stolen when he gets a little verklempt. He also sounds really macho and cool when he unnecessarily abbreviates words like velocity (veeelo) and comparison. “That’s a far comp, Brock” could be a drinking game phrase. He does have a couple of redeeming qualities, however. He doesn’t like soccer, he looks exactly like the Hobbit from the 1970s cartoon versions of LOTR, and he obviously puts in a lot more time than Brock, doing what seems to be some producing tasks. In a fair world, the show would be called Maura, Salk, and Brock, but more on that later. As a Husky fan since the Warren Moon days, Brock Huard is easily in my top 57 favorite UW Quarterbacks of all time. Oh, the days when Brock wore that big ol grape on his head in that era of underachievement and terrible uniforms. Brock seems to take a lot of time off. He can’t be bothered to wake from his peaceful slumber for the 0600 hour of the pod and he has a wedding, fishing trip, is coaching, analyzing some game no one watches, or a monster truck show several times a month it would seem. One of my favorite things about Brock is when he played QB for the Seahawks and would take his helmet off. You couldn’t tell which was the Seahawks logo and which was Brock’s head since both had those piercing eyes on the side. However, when Brock graces the airwaves with his presence he brings it. What that ‘it’ is depends on the day and subject. It is fun to hear Salk splash around verbally and Brock come to the rescue and bail him out. I was born at Good Samaritan hospital many moons ago, so I feel a kinship to Brock due to our Puyallup connection. And my head is huge. When I was in Pony League and Jr. High football, I had to wear a High School helmet. So I feel his pain. He carries it well. Very quickly on Lyle; I didn’t think I’d miss him, but I do. I miss the utter bewilderment that I felt when he would reveal that he knew absolutely nothing about anything, ever other than sabermetrics. I am half convinced he was raised by pigeons with that vast span of worldly knowledge. I follow him at Marine Layer which is very good, and he gave me lots and lots of incredulous laughs. Now for Maura. Nope. No critique. She’s awesome, a backbone of the show, and she will be kicking butt in the sports community as she moves forward in her career. Then there’s me who for some reason listens to nearly every show via podcast (except for the first hour. IFKYK). The show is awesome. Top 2 or 3 show in the history of Seattle Sports talk, including that drek from the competing station. Love you guys, really. VR, Big Koop

Long time listener, first time reviewer. Need Salk to feel the love after listening today. You two are my connection to Seattle sports, specifically the Seahawks. Seahawks fan since day one. You two offer great insight, perspective, and you keep it fun. Keep it up!
