This podcast is a roundup of the day’s major breaking news events. As such, it is judiciously concise: in generally under ten minutes, through both original reporting and through referencing other outlets’ reports, it gives me a fundamental understanding of what’s happening in the U.S.A. and around the world. It’s become an essential part of my morning routine. I particularly appreciate, when this podcast references other outlets’ reporting, that it credits the other outlet; often I’ll then pull up that other source for a more in-depth picture, and this has exposed me to other interesting news platforms. I built an iPhone shortcut that plays Apple News Today every morning when I get into my car. The podcast’s ethical journalism is a rarity in today’s toxic news environment. Its format is informative, intelligent, and non-biased. Shumita Basu is quite possibly the perfect host. Her intelligence drives her curiosity. I love her relaxed, probing interviewing style. News is very much a team effort and Apple News Today’s production staff clearly includes several talented news writers, researchers, and producers. Every news story is balanced, varied, and uniquely informative. Apple News Today has quickly grabbed a spot among my most trusted online news sources.

I listen to this podcast every morning. It is the perfect mix of the big news topics worldwide and domestically that I need to be aware of, both good and bad. The news is so tainted these days that this is an easily consumable format, giving me just the information I need, explaining complex topics simply and only takes about 10 minutes of my day. I also love that it is unbiased, which is hard to find.

What I appreciate most is how it strikes the balance between covering the day’s top stories and diving into thoughtful, in-depth features. Basu’s approachable style and sharp insights help connect the dots between what’s happening and why it matters, often drawing from the work of the world’s top journalists. Whether it’s breaking news or ongoing global issues, I can always count on Apple News Daily to deliver concise, well-researched coverage without the spin. When this show started it definitely leaned to the left, but now they have gone all-in on it. Everything from subtle things like the background music and soundbites chosen to blatant things like the recent coverage of the presidential primaries and debates. On the main show, they had a daily in-person report from the Democratic convention, followed by a half-hour “In Conversation” episode focusing exclusively on how they’re trying to get Kamala Harris elected. Then they gave glowing reviews to her debate “win,” praising her for getting under Trump’s skin as a way of dodging tough questions about immigration and the economy. Meanwhile the coverage about Trump was that his handlers are just trying to keep him on-script and not do anything stupid. The bias is staggering. Where was the daily report from the Republican convention? Where was the coverage of Biden and his handlers as he repeatedly faltered in appearances and debates? Where was the In Conversation episode talking about the effort to get Trump elected? Do better.

I have been listening to this program since the beginning. The content is professionally done and aggregated to deliver daily news. It gives a good synopsis of what is going on in the world, USA, other fun areas. However, there is clearly an approach to the news they curate. They definitely report on stories that fit a narrative that Apple would like to push. It tries to talk about both positions in a political story but clearly favors ideology from left progressives. Just read how they write headlines and choose stories. For some reason, they seem to always cover stories about abortion rights. At least once or several times a week. If you listen to the podcast just remember to listen with a critical ear. This is news curated from Silicon Valley, it feels like there is an agenda. I would really like to have better journalism that asks hard questions on both sides of the political spectrum. The fourth estate is disappearing these days. If you’re looking for that, it is not here. This is good for quick news that will catch you up but know that it is very partisan.
